We are proud to operate an independent school with oral history intensives and specialized workshops, public events, and a community archive (Community Library of Voice and Sound). In 2020, we initiated the Education Narratives Project, a focused collection that seeks to record and disseminate the experiences of educators in the age of Covid-19.
Please support our work! This November, we are raising money for fellowships that support several tuition-free workshop spaces for BIPOC applicants, international applicants, and those doing community-based work in Hudson. We are continuing to accept donations throughout the year.
A note from OHSS Director Suzanne Snider, November 2023: Thank you to everyone who helped us launch our school into its next decade last November and to launch me into my next decade, personally, by donating money, books and well wishes! It's been a rich year of bringing OHSS to new physical sites (New Jersey, Maine, Upstate NY) while continuing to build our online curriculum. Online offerings address a range of accessibility needs (mobility, care commitments and the elimination of prohibitive travel expenses). We're excited to launch into 2024 with new workshops and some additional offerings (oral history co-working, transcription services and public art commissions--details to follow).
This year, we're focusing our fundraising in a few areas:
1] Fellowship funds to help our school thrive with the broadest representation possible around the table. Your contributions support tuition-free seats, which in turn, allows us to support economic parity and also allows us to invite participants doing adjacent work to attend tuition-free, prioritizing BIPOC fellows
2] We are also fundraising through our book registry with Bookshop.org, a virtual bookstore that networks local independent booksellers and in our case, will offer kickbacks to our beloved Spotty Dog Books & Ale in Hudson. These books are part of our oral history library, which is shared onsite with students and studied by our instructors and staff as we build curriculum. As an independent school, we put every box of paper clips on our list of expenses. Your donations have meant so much to us in terms of our financial capacity and also serve as spiritual support.
3] If you are not able or moved to donate books or money, we would be so grateful for a memory of your time at OHSS as part of our annual celebration. Please email info@oralhistorysummerschool.com with your favorite OHSS memory.
