Conducted online (Platforms will include Zoom, Google Drive, and VoiceThread)
Supported in part by Hindenburg Radio Editing Software.
Come all ye budding oral historians, artists, advocates, and researchers who wish to make use of oral history in your practices. This immersive summer workshop is a rigorous introduction to the field of Oral History. Over the course of ten days, we’ll cover interview techniques, project design, recording tutorials for online and in-person recording, and ethics, along with special topics related to the field. This is a great opportunity to jump-start a project in a supportive environment, or to get this training under your belt for future projects with the benefit of deadlines and critique. Participants will be conducting interviews throughout the week. No experience necessary.
This year's workshop includes sessions devoted to reciprocity, repatriation, and archives, in conjunction with the public launch of our archive of narratives, songs and sound.
A note about the online format: This workshop will engage students from around the world in synchronous and asynchronous sessions through mini-lectures, interactive exercises, case studies and interview practice. Students will be guided by lead instructor, OHSS director Suzanne Snider, and a range of guest instructors who will prepare presentations of their work and be available for questions from students. This workshop involves interview training and practice.
*Live sessions will take place several days a week (not daily) at 12 PM with optional 6 PM hop-ons for those with significant time differences. Live sessions will be recorded for use by participants.
Tuition includes access to videos, live sessions, voicethreads and optional “hop-ons” along with our usual e-oral history reader and materials to be mailed: a workbook (hard copy), OHSS tote bag and pin.
Tuition
Tuition is offered on a sliding scale. Please select the tuition level that most closely matches your circumstances. We ask each participant to consider these brackets and the accompanying text thoughtfully. Tuition covers instruction time as well as hours for preparation, administration and staffing. We are a self-funding, independent program that seeks to increasingly broaden the audience for this work.
Individual/Independent: $750
This tuition is for individuals paying their own tuition without personal or professional assistance.
Supporter: $800
Supporter-level tuition helps to support and subsidize participation for others. Any funds collected beyond the Independent level go directly to our scholarship fund. OHSS seeks to support--and benefits from--cohort diversity and community-based work, which are priorities in distributing scholarship funds. This level is appropriate for individuals who are able to pay a slightly higher tuition.
Institutional: $900
This is the tuition for those whose tuition is covered in part or full by an institution. This includes universities and colleges, employers, fellowships or other outside support. Please consider paying at this level if you have access to any assistance.
*Workshop materials include a workbook, folder, pin, tote bag, and e-reader, along with a series of instructional videos.
